When you transfer a credit card balance, does the card you’re trasferring from get closed?

I have one Amex card that Id like to transfer the balance from since Im paying 19.99%! I dont want to close the card though as I like the benefits. I just want to transfer the balance to a new card that offers 0% on all transfers for 12 months.

Can I do this? Thanks in advance for the answers!

No, the account remains open until you close it.

Yes, You can do that. The card does not close by itself, so you don’t have to worry.

The old card does not close automatically, so you can keep both cards.

NO you would have to call that copmany and officially cancel it. you’ll actually just have a 0 balance on the card. People do it all the time to save on the interest. SO NO you will still have an open credit card and they may even up your balance to get you to charge to it again!

Are you transferring to another AMEX card? I don’t know if you can do this if you are. If you transfer from AMEX to a different credit card, no, they do not automatically close your account.

Absolutely! Just because you transfer a balance the credit card is not automatically closed. The card can only be closed if you close the account via a phone call or letter OR the credit card company closes it due to no payments received on the card, and obviously it then goes into collections eventually. You’re safe to transfer the balance with no worries :-)

nope you need to close it yourself… and hurry before you start using it again!!

No, they won’t close your AMEX account. When you transfer a balance, it’s just like making a payment to the account you transfer from, only you’re not the one sending the check to AMEX. You will be left with little or no balance on your AMEX card, but the account will remain open.

Your Amex card will be NOT be closed, unless you call or write a letter stating that you are going to close your account.

The card you are going to transfer the money to usually has a transfer fee (check the fine print for any fees).

No! You must close it yourself. This goes for anything bought on credit. Pull your credit report (it’s free if you put it in writing) and you’ll see some old accounts. It’s good to clean those out, as too much available credit is bad for your credit score.

Kilo…You can absolutely do this and your Amex will not be closed. Generally, credit cards can only be closed by the cardholder upon request or by the institution upon default.
